EducationBachelor of Science in Journalism/Communications, minor in Psychology from Boston University; Cumulative GPA: 3.17, GPA in major: 3.55
Recently acquired CT and WA teacher certification for English Language Arts 7-12. I will graduate with a Masters in English in May 2015.
ExperienceI recently finished my student teaching semester and have extensive experience working in a school system and with tutoring individuals of all ages. I was a substitute teacher for two years and held various other internships through my graduate programs. I have also tutored/mentored school-age children and teenagers. My cumulative SAT score was a 1900 (610 Math, 660 writing, 630 reading). My ACT score was a 29.
I would love to be a tutor because I love working with kids, most importantly I love helping kids better their language arts and writing skills. I believe that one-on-one teaching is very effective and I'd love to be a part of that. I think being a tutor will also be additional practice for my upcoming days as a teacher, and further my communication skills with children.
I also enjoy working with post-secondary students (e.g. college, graduate, doctorate students) and helping them with research and writing papers. I currently work with two doctoral candidates, and assist them with editing their dissertations.
I had two internships while studying abroad in Sydney, Australia that helped me significantly in writing and editing work. I was a staff writer for an online magazine and an assistant editor at a publishing company. This real-world experience helped my writing skills tremendously.
HobbiesI am 24 years old and have a strong belief that a good education can go a very long way (hence why I want to become a teacher!) I love to travel - I studied abroad to Australia in 2011 and also visited the countries of New Zealand and Fiji. I went backcountry camping in Alaska in Summer 2013, and I have driven cross-country twice this year. I love to read - Harry Potter will always be my favorite, but I will always love classics like "To Kill a Mockingbird" and "The Great Gatsby." I'm also very active and was into sports all throughout grade school/highschool/college and I ran my first half marathon in May 2012. Last but not least, I love dogs! I have a 2-year-old shepherd mix that I rescued from an animal shelter last September.
